FLASH BRINDISI AT THE READING TERMINAL MARKET:

On Saturday, April 24th, over 30 members of the Opera Company of Philadelphia Chorus and principal cast members from the upcoming production of La Traviata converged on the Reading Terminal Market Italian Festival. Wearing street clothes and blending in with the crowd, the artists swung into action after the first orchestral strains of the famed "Brindisi" were piped through the market, giving a rousing, surprise performance for hundreds of delighted onlookers who were there to enjoy the Italian delicacies and the everyday treats that the Reading Terminal Market has to offer.

I am sure they were doing it premotionally, but if I was in the Opera, I'd be like, "LET'S DO THIS IN THE CITY A COUPLE OF TIMES A YEAR!" HOW FUN MUST THIS BE?

Yes! And there really only seemed to be one guy in the crowd who was all "Gimme my sausage & peppers already."

My kid has already danced to it about a billion times and I'm dizzy. I explained to her that the main woman, Violetta, was once played by Mary Costa, who was in her Sleeping Beauty movie, but she just wanted to jump on my bed.

Here!

Oh that's a lovely opera. If only it didn't end tragically, like, you know, almost every other opera ever written. LOL we opera lovers, we're such emotional masochists. :D

that was AWESOME! i liked, also, the fact that the ratio of delighted to annoyed ppl was very high - only saw a couple snickering or otherwise not enjoying it

that little old lady with the big smile on her face? CUTEST THING EVER!

YEAH IT WAS AWESOME. ANNOYED PEOPLE NEED TO GO AWAY.

GRANTED, they might be annoyed because they just put their dog down or something, so we shouldn't judge.

Dude, no matter how many times I see these things, they never fail to make me smile. Because people always look so awkwardly surprised at first, but then they relax and enjoy.

Also, Philly's a great city for something like this.

I AM SO SAD THAT I DIDN'T GET TO SEE LA TRAVIATA. IT WAS THE ONLY OPERA THEY DID THIS SEASON THAT I WANTED TO SEE, AND I DIDN'T GET TO. D:

GAH.

I am toying of getting a season pass to the opera this year, but I don't know if I want to see them all.

Date: 2010-07-02 09:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] golden-d.livejournal.com
I enjoy opera, but I rarely want to see more than one or two being performed each season. This year they're doing Tosca, so I'll try to make that one at least.

La Traviata is horribly depressing. On the other hand, Domingo probably has done it, so I'm not surprised.

Date: 2010-07-03 04:08 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] kwanalicious.livejournal.com
Oh yeah, to say that it was a bummer is to put it mildly. I think it might be the Domingo version.
