1. Okay, John Sacrimoni of course is a horrible man, but one thing I will give him is that he, unlike a lot Of the others, he genuinely loves Ginny and the girls. He even gets into planning the seating (granted he's in the can), but I honestly watch the guy in the show and the affection he shows for his wife and daughters is more than I can say for any number of the others.

2. [livejournal.com profile] aster_laevis sent me the link and she told me it was painted just for me. Io9 cals it The Most Self-Explanatory Painting in Human History. THEY ARE CORRECT.

3. While at the salon getting highlights today, the hairdresser next to me was waiting to hear about her dog, who picked a fight with a bigger dog and was pretty badly wounded and in surgery and things. So We're all sitting there and her phone rings and we're all sitting there listening and she says something to her husband and then all of a sudden she says "Really?" in that sobby voice where you know someone's gonna cry. Se says something about how good it is, and you know that the dog's okay, but she's sobbing in those high pitched sobs, and I'm getting watery, and she's covering her face and she can't speak, and the woman in her chair is wiping her eyes, and people are looking over all over the salon. She's talking to her husband and crying and my hair dresser is all teared up, and when it was all over, everyone in the salon was in some sort of tears. She's apologising, and we're all wiping our faces and then she tells us that she was fine, but her husband was crying on the other end, and that set her off. LAWL.

4. I want a mortadella sandwich.

COOKING FAIL—

Lemon-Pepper Poppvers are supposed to look like this:

And yet:

They said that I could make them in a muffin pan if I changed the baking time, and yet:

Emperor Mander, what is your verdict?

The woman at the salon reminds me of my all-time favorite memory from working in a vet clinic.

This dog had been in a coma for three weeks--serious illness followed by even more serious reaction to only medication to treat illness, all around bad shit. The couple who owned the dog were awesome. She came in every day, sitting with him for an hour or more and talking with him and even doing some of the force-feeding necessary to keep him alive. Her husband came in three or four times a week on his lunch hour, skipping lunch to visit the dog.

One day she went to put the tube in to feed the dog and the dog licked her hand. First voluntary movement he'd made in three weeks, first sign that he was recovering. She burst into tears. I yelled for the veterinarian, who determined that he really was awake and responsive. (His chances of survival had been well below 50%.)

She got on the phone immediately and phoned her husband. We could only hear her end of the conversation, of course:
"This is Ms. Owner, I need to speak to Staff Seargant Owner."
...
"Well get him OUT of the staff meeting!"

Ten minutes later he was at the clinic, so-- *grin*

Lots of cuteness going on at your house!

That cheese/apple pie sounds good.

Once reason for the fail on the popovers COULD be weather related -- if the humidity was high. Seriously.

I'd try the recipe again on a different-weather day.

You might have a thing there. It wasn't humid, though. even still, they don't have leavening in them, and something about whisking the eggs is supposed to make them rise. I don't get it. I'll try again with a different recipe and see what happens.

OMG. Your cat. It's awesome.

Love these photos -- nails, hair, kid, everything. That haircut really suits you! Also, those leeks and carrots look excellent. Is there anything else in there with them, or are they just leeks and carrots?

Date: 2010-03-20 06:57 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
Leeks and carrots: Half 3 leeks (white and pale greens only) lengthwise and cut crosswise into 1 inch pieces and then wash. Saute leeks in 3 TBSP butter with 1 TSP salt in a heavy skillet over medium high until softened (5-6 minutes). Stir in 1 lb carrots, cut diagonally into 1 1/2 inch pieces, 1 1/2 cups of water and 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar. Cook until carrots are soft (about 25 minutes, I covered it to make it go faster.). Boil, uncovered until liquid has evaporated.

I let the water boil up and got a brown on the bottom, which I stirred in, and that made it better, actually.

If I wasn't going to Sydney today, I would totally be making them tonight. They will have to wait until Tuesday! I'll be home for dinner on Tuesday! And in time to scrub leeks (I hate LEEK DIRT. You know LEEK DIRT? And how it lurks if you're not a scrubber? And then you crunch on something and think: Jesus, I hope that's not a snail)

Yeah, they had notes on how to clean them but I didn't see until it was too late and I pitched them. I ended up halving them lengthwise and washing the while trying to hold them together. Then I cut them, But they fell apart and that was okay. They wilted pretty good anyway.

WOOHOO FOR COOKING!

That 'recipe' you put up ages ago still makes me giggle... the one with pics of you and kidlet going through drivethru.

We cooked a couple of awesome things in the past few days. We cooked an organic roast chicken, then made stock from the carcass. Also, I made a very crumbly pear cake, which was delish.

Your hair really suits you that length.

GIGANTACAT!
