I'm not sure either, but I am intrigued. Anyone have any thoughts?

Isn't that the hurt portion of h/c?

Healing/anxiety?

a story that starts off with a person feeling good, recovered, and then he's hit with a railroad spike and dies?

They also make a Romeo and Juliet and a Pride and Prejudice with Twilight inspired covers. All three of them came in a display together. And then I curled up behind my information desk and wept.

anti-h/c

Hmmm. If the trope of hurt/comfort is about someone hurting (mentally/emotionally/physically/&c) and that hurt being assuaged by a comfort (encouragement/approval/different levels of physicality/&c), then perhaps the opposite would be a scenario in which the "assuage" part of the equation is flipped, so, the comfort *is* the hurt, or where the comfort fails to alleviate the hurt (although I would still classify some failed-comfort fics as h/c). Interesting question.

Date: 2010-01-21 05:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
This is where my brain was going, but I'm not sure that flips the trope, like a person would look at that fic and say "that's anti-h/c" as opposed to "that's failed h/c". I guess it would all be in the labelling, right?

Hell, no one reads headers, anyway.

Well, the logical version of anti-h/c is not-hurt/not-comfort, which is, well, everything except h/c. So yeah, I got nuthin'.

Yeah, but you know how like when we say someone is an anti-hero, like...Oh, deadpool or something, they're not really the OPPOSITE, because the opposite of hero is villain. I think this is like that. Like in this case anti isn't going to mean opposite precisely.

I don't know. Hrm.

The Twi-fic-ation of the globe continues apace. Oh well done.

Jesus, I don't know what I was thinking. I guess what interests me in h/c, especially for Janto, is that there's this whole subtext of (a) actions speak louder than words, especially among men, ergo (b) men showing care and tenderness, yes they can, (c) knowing what needs doing without being told. There are some pretty powerful fantasies embedded in all that, which I guess is the source of the appeal, and could be interesting to play with. Or sometimes words and actions are opposed to each other, e.g. with someone like Owen, who often turns up in fic patching people together and cursing them out simultaneously.

I thought about it afterwards, tried to come up with an example, and julad's story came to mind: http://community.livejournal.com/tw_flashfic/4684.html

But obvs, there's comic and cracky ways one could spin the tropes as well. And I kind of like the idea of fail!h/c. Jack won't shut up, Ianto's coffee makes everyone hurl, there's no magic healing cock in sight, the takeaway ordered to tide over the wounded gives food poisoning, the showers run out of hot water at the shampooing stage, yada yada. The bathtub that's too small. :)

Don't ask me why I'm thinking about this shit.

Anti h/c. I'm thinking assuaging pain with abuse. If it hurts make it hurt more. Since someone else comforts the Hurt person in the H/C. But if it's anti... like you said it's not opposite.

To continue the hero-analogy. Instead of being comforted by Kitty Pryde it's Batman telling you to buck up and keep fighting. Um. Right. Sort of.

Also: Stuff that doesn't come from pigs should not be named Bacon. I'm looking at you, Turkey Bacon.

I think my idea of anit-h/c was in What Lies Within - Ianto going blind suddenly and possibly dying and Jack's like ... fuck, that sucks and I still have to go save the world so here's a cab and I'll maybe see you tonight.

In other words, my anit-h/c is usually 'the world doesn't stop (espeically for starship captains, heros of the universe, etc) because one's lover etc is injured/dying. It's not abandonment due to dislike or anger but the neccesities of the situation are more important than kissing the boo-boos.

I kinda think of my first aid kink story as anti-h/c... maybe even specifically anti-torchwood!h/c?

Because, ok, post-countrycide went more like this:

Ianto: hurt, but needs to NOT be totally vulnerable and in someone else's hands, asserting control over the situation is the best medicine.
