1. Gun porn moment: The New Kahr P380. Yeah, small, better for concealed carry, but what about the recoil? The last Kahr I test-drove packed more punch than a .45. And also: The Glock 22 RTF .40. RTF=ROUGH TEXTURE FRAME. I think I might be a little in love. Just a smidge. Glock had to invent a new word for the texture: "polymids". Oh Glock, don't ever change. Still, too big, probably for my hand or concealed carry. But: Glock!
Yes. I might have purchased the Combat Handguns magazine at the store. And also Special Weapons for M&P. What?
NO NO WAIT. Y HALLO THAR, LOVER. I don't even know what I would DO with it, but I want it. I want it badly. IT LOOKS LIKE THE LASSITER, FROM FIREFLY.

ithildyn has asked a few hard questions, and I aim to answer them in a convoluted manner!
1. If you write fic, do you ever feel as if you need to go with popular fanon when you write or do you stick to canon as you see it as much as you can?
2. As a reader, do you prefer to read fic with familiar fanon content, or do you prefer more canonical fic?
3. What are some fanon/canon things in your fave fandoms? Which ones do you hold true in your personal fanon canon and which ones make you twitch?
1. When do we establish what is fanon? Like I have my own personal fanon. I'll use TW: In my personal fanon, every time they get Indian food, they get jilebi, because Ianto likes them. It just keeps popping up. Now it’s a running gag for my brain. In my fanon, uhm, in Highlander, Methos rents his flat in Paris from Madame Oudinot, a little old lady with white hair up on her head in braids, who is a little senile and often thinks that Methos is her dead son, Jacques.
I guess we would have to get more outside personal fanon then, to like, I guess the fact that Methos throws the bottlecaps behind the fridge is fanon, right? And that he doesn't pay his bar tab, right? Or…help me out here. I use it if it works, if it's funny. IME, most fanon things are small, so I usually don't notice them.
2. Oh if it works, then it works. I don't mind Methos tossing those bottlecaps behind the fridge as long as it's not excessive. I think sometimes good fanon can be played like fanservice. That's really what it is: our in-jokes and things. And they can be done so well.
Of course, in the hands of evil, even this jilebi can turn sour.
3. See above and shit. What I really want are examples. I'm trying hard to think of them. Really hard.
3. I HAVE COUNTED TO THREE SO MANY TIMES IN THIS POST I DON'T KNOW WHAT NUMBER I'M ON.
4. I cut mah bangs. I cut them too short and am now sporting some

Note the face of, "Huh? What? I fucked up, Beavis." The baby is amused. The baby is always amused. But not here:

IN JAIL! Haaahahha.
Srsly, those crib rails come off today.

Date: 2009-07-08 02:42 pm (UTC)I think my personal fanon things are still somewhat based on canon. I write a slightly psychic Ianto (as per the comment in Doctor Who about Torchwood employees having some psychic training), but it's not like it's something I've ever made a plot point about. Things like Ianto knowing when people are going to acknowledge him, and stuff like that. But I don't go as far as Ianto having perfect recall or anything like that. I think he's just organized.
As a reader, I prefer canon-things, or at least, like above, ideas that come up based on things rooted in canon. I don't like most fanon perceptions of the characters.
Mmmm, omg, I want Indian food now.

I stick to canon, pretty much. I like filling in holes in canon most of all, though.
2. As a reader, do you prefer to read fic with familiar fanon content, or do you prefer more canonical fic?
The latter by far. I don't mind fanon, but I like new takes on things.
3. What are some fanon/canon things in your fave fandoms? Which ones do you hold true in your personal fanon canon and which ones make you twitch?
In Torchwood, the fanon/canon things... I can't list everything, but I'm annoyed by woobie!Ianto and some of the Gwen characterization. I do like the fanon view that Jack sleeps very little.

When I read fanfic, I prefer things that fill holes in canon or extend logically out from canon. Fanon annoys me, which is why I no longer go to church. Too much of the Catholic Church teaching as gospel is actually fanon based on geek-monks misogynism and phallic-worship. What doesn't serve the selfish aims of the church hierarchy, that is.
Re: Fanon/Canon
Date: 2009-07-08 04:29 pm (UTC)2. I agree. I like them when they're little things sometimes, but not overwhelming characterizations, like "Ianto is the bottom". Like I called it the Hub Tub once, and then I saw it start popping up in fics, and that made me giggle.
3. Oh Jesus, Catholic Church. How about that Immaculate conception of Mary that we are all free to either believe in or not, whatever? Look, it's either Immaculate or not. WHICH ONE?

Date: 2009-07-08 06:41 pm (UTC)I had a hard time coming up with major Highlander fanon stuff. Only some of the little things you mentioned. Mag 7, OTOH, is rife with it. Probably something to do with having a mere 22 episodes to play with versus Highlanders six seasons.
