Have you ever written something, reread it, realise that this is the best thing you have ever written, and suddenly get very nervous?

I wrote roommate!Ianto. And it's fabulous.

UNITED KINGDOM PEOPLE: I need slang for getting high. I used the following phrases in my fic, but I cannot vouch for their accuracy in other places. Even if they are old slang, I don't care, that works for me:

...you plan on baking out...
...you have the habit of burning one at least every other week...
taking a hit (as in off the bong)
...you hit the bong again...

Nggg I gotta say none of those really feel authentic to my British ear except taking a hit/hitting the bong (though these things can be regional). Baking out definitely not, I'd have no clue what you were doing if you told me that.

Getting caned, getting wasted, having a smoke, having a puff, were all working phrases back in my disreputable stoner days in Bible class.

ETA: I had only minimal contact with bongs though I must admit, and failed miserably the only time I tried to make one with a coke bottle, a straw and some sellotape. ALL MY LOVELY SMOKE ESCAPED.

Yeah, I concur - I was having trouble remembering what we used to say, but getting wasted used to apply equally to hash and booze when I was in uni, I'm sure. Also, I think we used to refer to having a smoke because none of us actually smoked cigarettes so it was clear what it would mean :)

Yeah, and I think I respect the opinion of the people in this fandom a great deal, and so I put expectations on myself. I'm not very practical.

Yeah, I have the same problem. I got into writing as sort of a lark, as a way of giving back some of the same porny goodness that I'd been enjoying for years. You pay content with content, on the Internet. And then I answered a prompt and wrote something that I wanted to continue...then I was going for this crazy idea of rough character correctness...then I managed to attract a beta whose writing I respected immensely (still have no idea how I did that, but I feel really lucky that I did), and I wanted to live up to a standard that he'd respect. Then I thought, 'What if I try to write something that isn'tporn?' Of course, if you're not distracting your readers with smut, then you really need to step up the quality.

So yeah. I've been there. I'm still there. I feel for you. The nice thing about setting the bar high, though, is that sometimes you reach it. And that's a very nice feeling.

God, I've been posting fic online for 12 years. Dood. I think I stagnated there in the early 2000's, but I like to think that since 2006 I've been coming back. And I have never been one for porn, so all of that is new to me. I mean, I like to READ it, but I can't write things without some sort of plot, and yadda yadda yadda.

I haven't had a beta since I was in the Highlander fandom (and I still am in it, and I still have a beta in it, but it's not a steady thing), and I don't have one for any other fandoms, just people I avail myself of. And I used to get a spag beta, but now I find that I want one for other things, like theme and pacing and you know, elements and shit. Never happened to me before.
