I woke up this morning to this:

GAH. THIS CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING—IT'S TIME FOR NORWEGIAN COFFEE.

Step One: Boil water I measured out my full coffee pot minus one cup.

Ready the ingredients. I chose to use Ritual's Ethiopia Gedeo:

Your extra cup of water (cold), and one egg!

ETA: Actually, what you should o is mix the egg and grounds with 1/4 cup of the reserved water. Save the last 3/4 cup for the end.

Crack the egg and mix it in good with your coffee grounds. Add the cup of cold water and stir. (see above)

Nastay.

When the water is boiling, reduce to a simmer and add the egg/coffee mix. Set timer and simmer for 2 ½ minutes. Ready your mug!

ETA: When you take the coffee off the heat add the 3/4 c cold water to settle the grounds better.

Strain the coffee. My mesh seive wasn't good enough, so I used my coffee filter (not a paper filter)

EW, grounds.

The grounds bind with the egg and put them to the bottom, leaving you with a rich, clear brew:

SWEDISH PLASMA!

BORK BORK BORK. THE FILM IS OKEY-DOKEY!

Isn't that what they also call "cowboy coffee"? How different does it taste from regular coffee? If it doesn't taste different, why did you make it like that this morning?

QUESTIONS I HAZ THEM.

I don't know what cowboy coffee is, but This Norwegian Egg Coffee (detailed here (http://www.hendricksmn.com/norwegian-egg-coffee.html). I know some people put the egg in the filter with the coffee, shells and all.) It's a nice rich coffee. The Gedeo I was using tasted very stale and harsh last time I made it (almost sour), and this mellowed it totally.

Ah! "Cowboy coffee" is made by heating coarse grounds with water in a pot, letting the grounds settle and pouring off the liquid to drink, sometimes filtering it to remove fine grounds. While the name suggests that this method was used by cowboys, presumably on the trail around a campfire, it is used by others; some people prefer this method. This method is still used in certain situations in Finland, Norway and Sweden, which have the highest consumption of coffee per-capita, but filter brewing is the standard method there today.

Yes! It doesn't say that, but sometimes "cowboy coffee" or "campfire coffee" uses an egg shell, not an egg. You boil the coffee and the water together in the pot with a rinsed out crushed eggshell, and the calcium in the shell reduces the acidity of the boiled coffee and helps the grounds settle.

Yeah I saw that in my research. Sounds like it probably started in one place and was co-opted by another etc etc etc.

I was wondering about the egg. Is it primarily to bind to the grounds, or does it have another purpose as well?

Date: 2011-01-21 03:02 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
It does bind to the grounds, but you can definitely taste it. Not in a "this tastes like eggs" way, but in a, "this tastes richer" way.

I will be curious to try it with different coffees. This one was almost too singular to get a good feel for it.

I imagine though, that if you had stale coffee, this would be a nice way to improve the taste without throwing it out.

O_O Egg? What? I might have to test that on some unsuspecting relative, but THIS IS WHY WE COME UP WITH JOKES ABOUT THE NORWEGIANS!

Despite having lived in Norway and taking lessons there, I SUCK at skiing. I wish I could, but I always fall flat on my face. Or on my ass. Or on my knees. And then I can't get up. But the views are nice.

I stole that from Joanna Fluke's Hannah Swensen mysteries. That's what they call coffee in her town. It's from her that I started researching egg coffee!

Mmmmm peppermint tea(I love Stash). But at bedtime? I started researching medicinal uses of peppermint tea when I was sick recently, and mentions of it being a stimulant came up a few times.

Definitely nice to have a cuppa when it is BELOW ZERO outside though.

I find for me it's a sedative. Also, that it's not caffeinated probably says a lot.

I think the mint part of the flavor and aroma just perk me up a bit. Am thinking of making some now against the near zero temperature though.

I love coffee and well huh I have never heard of this at all! I am always learning something new from this lj. LOL. I will consider trying it. As you may guess, all I have in the house is Starbucks coffees.

Date: 2011-01-21 05:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
Apparently, Starbucks has tried to steal this recipe many times. Which is funneh, because I got it off the internet. But anyway, I'd try one of their blends for this. A mild one might work best.

I may have to try this tomorrow morning. One reason I like dark roast coffee is that it seems to have a lower acid content than lighter roasts. They also have less caffeine which may or may not be a good thing, depending.

I may have missed a step in the photo essay above but what was the Benefiber for?

From: [identity profile] gypsylady.livejournal.com
YOU'RE old? YOU? Listen, next to me you're a small child who may or may not be toilet trained...

How did this manage to be a poop discussion?

In fairness, I put flaxseed meal into my smoothies. Benefiber is too expensive for me.

Date: 2011-01-21 06:22 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
I have to take 65 mgs of iron, so I take the benefiber.

I find that the older you get, the more likely your discussion is going to turn towards bowel related issues.

Lol this is true the younger you get, too. I guess there's a poop bell curve.
