Title: Reclamation
Author: [livejournal.com profile] amand_r, cast of thousands.
Characters: everyone

Warnings: This fic contains a trigger (for rape), BUT IT CAN BE BYPASSED by choosing the labelled link at the correct time in the story. IF YOU ARE DISINCLINED TO READ THAT SEGMENT, the non-trigger option is clearly labelled at the appropriate time. It will not affect your understanding of the fic.

Author's Notes: This is a physical fic. I hesitate to call it art (or ficart). The text has been written by me, but all handwriting was painstakingly collected from: [livejournal.com profile] kel_reiley, [livejournal.com profile] used_songs, [livejournal.com profile] valancy_joy, [livejournal.com profile] bethcarielle, [livejournal.com profile] 51stcenturyfox, [livejournal.com profile] neifile7, [livejournal.com profile] sanginmychains, [livejournal.com profile] joanwilder, [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge, [livejournal.com profile] pogrebin and [livejournal.com profile] cruentum.
The webpage layout, logo and programming of the frame that you see all the pieces through was designed and put together by [livejournal.com profile] angstslashhope, who when she heard of the project was appalled that I was going to slap them up there with o background or anything. she even made a flavicon! How gorgeous is that?! UNIT logo lifted from [livejournal.com profile] the_dosk, Torchwood logos lifted from the interwebs in general. Cast list at the end. Have fun trying to guess who was who!

Summary: Item: Metal fire-proof box and contents. Catalogue #: 011J36FK-YRT-00l3. Location of retrieval: Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff (Torchwood Three headquarters). Object was found in debris following explosion at the Torchwood Three Hub; outside of the box is scarred, dented' one box corner depressed; burn marking evident; contents unharmed. Priority: low.

That is freakin' awesome. Its like beautiful torture to have those delicious snippets of stories told in other peoples voices/hands all with that way we have of telling the truth as we understand it and want it to be. And always, invariably sharing so much more about ourselves than we realize. Gods that was cool. I never wanted it to end. And I wanted to ask Jack what they all meant to him and what he was thinking when he got each letter. Why he kept those and not others... and and and... and yet... that's the nature of letters and a box of mementos isnt it? *sigh*

Awesome sauce.

OMG THAT WAS THE POINT.

LIKE, I have no idea what the Alice Guppy one was about, but I WANT to know why he kept it. And what did he say to Harriet on the bridge? I dunno.

I like that he only kept post its from Ianto. LOL.

Thanks for reading! I am glad you liked it!

So many questions raised begging to be answered or at least mulled over and explored, so many stories bursting in my mind over every little piece.

Awesome! I finish one thing and then immediately get to read something else!

This was really goddamn creative. It's so great that you got so many people involved, and the outcome was just perfect. I love the Post-Its; very characteristic. Tosh's card was adorable. And the fact that it is its own little website - really awesome. I love this kind of stuff, like copperbadge's epistolary fic, "All That I Ain't Got". It's my favorite kind of medium to read, and you did a really great job with it.

This was such a cool idea, and executed so well! Great attention to detail in the choosing of stationery. "Alice in Wonderland" for Alice? Lovely. Money for Hart? Snicker. Going back over it, I really like the Owen-Ianto back and forth, the post-its (of course I do), and I was touched by the drawing -- more so by the fact that he kept it.

Gorgeous handwriting, everyone!

Date: 2009-11-11 04:04 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think the most fun in this was the cryptic nature of the things that Jack felt he wanted to keep. He doesn't have anything from Owen, but Owen has written on two different things. He doesn't have a letter from Ianto. He has domestic post its. The drawing. The cryptic Alice Guppy card. I had to make Alice's stationery, but it seems to have worked.

I have to go over and read your DVD commentary!

This is fantastic! It was so cool to see how the tantalizing bits I knew about fit into the whole project. And I loved loved LOVED how many questions remained when the whole thing was done. This is one of those that, in my head, is now firmly part of the canon.

Date: 2009-11-11 04:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
WOOOOO! AWESOME. I tried very hard to make them things that we could find on the BBC site (well, except for Suzie.), so much so that they could be canonical.

Your Ianto handwriting remains one of my favs.

This hits very hard, since I'm going through documents and having to think about the stories and connections embedded in personal archives and...it's painful, but also very meaningful in a way. This isn't an epistolary fic but an archival one, even if most of the documents are addressed to Jack in some way. The real question, of course, is what got saved and why, since there's so much pain as well as joy here.

I'm just amazed at how evocative each of these snippets is, both in what they say and how they look. The Hart letter is MOW of course, but I think the four Ianto post-its are the absolute best match of form and content, the entire relationship practically distilled to haiku. And Alex's poem and the "twin hollows," written on that receipt, just gutted me.

I agree with C. In fact, there should be a fic challenge to go with this. But with strict word limits, I think, because the beauty of this is how spare it is, how fragmentary, and all the richer and truer for it.

Date: 2009-11-11 04:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
Aw, you liked mah poem! Yeah, I think I called it epistolary for lack of a better word, but it is more archival.

I am so glad that you liked it, and I'm excited to work on your epistolary fic! That is going to rule!
