this netbook has no word program, and it is very very wee. It has no cd drive for me to install from disc. Is there a good free word processing program out there? googledocs is fine and all, but i want to be able to work offline.

try openoffice, abi word or neooffice if you're using a mac type computer.

open office is full service but may be large for your HD

Objects in mirror are larger than they appear. ;)

Abiword is less fancy than open office but it might dl better.

There's OpenOffice, of course.

Also Liquid Story Binder, WriteWayPro, WriteItNow, Scrivener, and OneNote are all writing programs I've heard of but haven't used myself. They're all aimed at fiction writing, they're not just word processors. But that should give you some things to look at.

Ooo, double plus crap. I was going to say, if it's an Eee then it would have Open Office already on there.

If it's a Windoze machine, I like NoteTab, which has a free version, but it's a text editor rather than a word processor. It has a lot of word processor features though.

Good luck!

Open Office for the mother fucking win!

One thing you will need to do with open office, though, is if you want it to save into doc format, rather than its own thingy:

Tools > Options > Load/Save > General

In the 'Document type' header down the bottom, change the 'Always save as' to Microsoft Word 97/2000/XP.

Then, in the other flick down box, select 'Spreadsheet' and change the 'always save as' to Microsoft Excel 97/2000/XP. Then, select 'Presentation' and change the 'always save as' to Microsoft Power Point 97/2000/XP.

Hope that helps. :)

*grins*

Used to do that at least three times a day when I was doing Work For The Dole. (I used to rebuild/refurbish old computers for charity. OO.org was a staple, since there's no way we could afford legal Microsoft Office.)

I thought I'd miss all the shiny Office '07 thingies... but I haven't.

I loved Office '07's tabulated menus, but it became unstable and fucked up so regularly that it just wasn't practical any more. I think some file somewhere corrupted or something.

I actually hate all Microsoft Word versions after 97, and so I just keep installing it on my computers (the disk hasn't seemed to notice that I've installed it on like 15 different machines.). But this computer-- no disk drive! WAAAAA!

Too little too late since you have OpenOffice (which reminds me that I need to upgrade to the latest version), but does your computer have WordPad on it? Definitely word processor uber-lite, but it's a step up from notepad.

It might. It might be connected to this fucking office 2007 triel I have on here. I hate that shit.

It's pretty much default on every Windows Installation unless you explicitly don't install it. Much like Minesweeper or Freecell.

Go into Start->All Programs->Accessories->Word Pad

typing on Lola is an adventure. Must keep fingers arched ... I get used to it after a bit, but the wee-ness does take some gettting used to.
