1. Last night on the plane I wrote a whole fic from beginning to end. It is a visual epistolary fic, and I need help from YOU, fandom.

I need your handwriting. Because it's all to be done by hand. I'm pretty flexible with the pen and pencil, but in the end, I can only be so many people. I'm getting my mom to do one, but my associates who would normally help me are out of town. If you are interested, here is how it would work:

Send me your handwriting sample. Remember that it has to be legible.

I will send you the script, along with paper of my choosing to write on and a SASE. (Obviously you have to be willing to send me your address. I have tonnes of references in fandom about my security and non-craziness re: this issue, if you want to check around. In HP and HL fandom in particular.)

Write the letter in your own legible handwriting. None of them are horribly long. I will send extra paper in case you mess up.

You may not deviate from the script in any way. I need your handwriting, not your input. As a set, they all go together, and you will only be seeing your section. That said, should you be inclined to change the visual style of something, email me and we can discuss it.

This isn't time consuming, but it has to be something that you are willing to do quickly. It shouldn't take long. But if we have to wait on you, I can't put the whole thing together.

One of these will require a double mailing from one artist to another. We'll see how that goes.

So, that said, I need people who think they can do handwriting for the following individuals:

Owen
Ianto
Gwen
Alice Guppy(possibly Emily, I get them confused).
Jack's daughter, Alice

Thanks! I'd prefer US peeps, but if you DESPERATELY think you rule hard in the handwriting department, give it a shot.

Everyone gets credit. I'll list you all in the author's notes, but I won't say which handwriting is you unless you okay it.

Also? I need a beta for it. Please? It's all typed.

2. Also, I did a little of the cot_tossing wiad fics this weekend, and I see I was pretty well off in voting sort of. Two I drawered were gone, The one I had to win, obviously didn't. I really am surprised about [livejournal.com profile] godofstrife and a little crushed really, because I thought he was on to something. Maybe next year. The one I picked as my second runner up, it DID win, so I guess I have my finger one something.

Anyway, I have feedback for everyone, but no one wants it, honest, because I am mean. I look for things to dislike, because my default is to like something, to find the good in it. So when I got to negative mode, I get kind of. Meh. I don't want to call it mean, because I shouldn't equate criticism with meanness. Anyway, here are three scans of mah feedback, courtesy blurred, because I thought the scribbles were funny:

I believe that was the page on which I was reviewing "Associates", for obvious reasons.

Crue, here is your feedback. I did it Friday afternoon, WAY BEFORE THE AUTHOR REVEAL, SO THERE IS NO BIAS.

I liked several of the stories, but I think the authors and I had a parting of the ways as to what the prompt meant. I didn't think it meant, "oh it can take place in Cardiff if they just MENTION a foreign city." And my method then, is that , well, it was a nice story and all, but it's invalid. I couldn't even consider it for a win, though I didn't automatically drawer it. When we grade holistic essays for state testing, we give 0 for not meeting the prompt. One time I asked my students to write about school uniforms, and one of them misheard me and thought he could freewrite about whatever. He wrote a passable essay about karate, but it's 0, because prompt fail.

If I had read those stories on their own, I would have been kinder,. I found nice things to say about EVERY GODDAMN FIC, I just didn't like a great deal of them as requirements to meet a prompt. I'll be leaving feedback for the authors.

Also? I kind of loved the whole process I used this time. As a person who has been foundering in the overrun and overwatered excess of my own cleverness when it comes to writing fic (which is to say that I think I'm a lot more clever than I am, and that gets in the way of actually being clever, most of the time), I haven't been as cognizant of the process as I used to be. It's like I have been reawakened (to bitchiness), like Paul Muad'Dib Atreides in Dune. THE FIC MUST FUCKING FLOW, BITCHES.

All right, I said mah pieces. Is it next Friday yet?

I can do handwriting for this. Do you want the same handwriting we see in the Torchwood Archives book, or something original?

Date: 2009-07-27 03:10 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
Something original. I have images of the handwriting I have in mind for each character. I don't want to be biased by the archive book, and I was going to do it all on the computer, but I want the textual effects of reality, and it's obvious when someone puts text on a post it note, for example, as opposed to writing it on there and scanning it. Anyway, I blathered! And based in the contents of any given letter, I'm actually going to be directing people (Ianto's is in four parts, all separate, and they all have different moods. Yeah, they're post its).

I didn't post it, but I need a tosh, too. I think that's because I'm trying to get Kel to do it,. I saw her handwriting already. It's perfect.

And haha thanks for this feedback, and admittedly I chose Pittsburgh for Queer as Folk (that was Pittsburgh wasn't it) to die in with the DVDs and to not be typical American city and then I LOLd because you were from it and then I chose Coraopolis because it's reasonably close and because it fit my criteria of a town without being huge or pretty, THEN I had to change a line because I had it as a village when Jack passed by 100 years ago only to read that it was a booming town then LOL. OOOPS!

ANYWAY, yes, glad you liked it. And loving your feedback there, very snazzy, very nice.

And shithole, very fitting to what I had in mind.

Haahahha, that QaF US is set in Pgh is one of the biggest jokes of all time, because Liberty Avenue here, is actually a long stretch of ghetto and XXX sex shops. Coraopolis ("corrie-opolis") used to be much better, but when they shut down the mills and shit, well, lots of Pittsburgh just shriveled up.

I think I ended up making all kinds of connections that weren't intended, because of the Pittsburgh and how that meshed with your characterisation, and IF EVERYONE ELSE WHO HAD BEEN VOTING HAD BEEN FROM PGH, YOU'D BE KING. Like the one eyed man in the land of the blind or something.

I wish I had some bad stuff for you.

Dude, my handwriting is fugly and unreadable. I also lost my blu tooth adaptor so I can't even show you a photo of the fail.

You know I wasn't suprized during the reveal last night, I thought it kinda figured that a fic like that would lose. But when I looked at my candidates for drawering again (which were the two others that also lost and the fic that apparently everyone except crue and I thought was 'sweet'), I thought what the fuck? My fic was nowhere near as bad as the three that I drawered. Then I looked at the winning fics, saw fluff and realized, no matter how good the writing if you don't hit the public taste you either lose or are ignored.

From: [identity profile] amand-r.livejournal.com
I know about striking that balance. It's really hard, in a competition, to actually war with what you feel you need to write and what you know will get votes. It's hard, actually. But I didn't think yours was OOC or harsh at all. I said my piece about that fic over at N's journal. There was one that I am genuinely shocked to see made it through, and it wasn't even poorly written, it was just, no.

I dunno. On the other hand, as a voyeur, I get the benefit of being neutral about what I read in the sense that I'm just looking at things unfold, people's reactions, what they thought of the fics with a rather intrigued eye. I am interested to see what people liked and why. It's obvious that people were divided on Kali's fic, and most of my friends loved it hard, whereas I was kind of meh for structural reasons.

This also raises questions about feedback (I would never call what I do concrit), and when honesty is not the best policy, etc etc. Or when we offer feedback that is kind of vomited up and we don't think about what we're saying. I am sure I am guilty of both.

My handwriting is identical to my mother's; I can't tell the two apart. Occasionally I'll find old letters and whatnot of hers, and I'll be all, wait a minute, I don't recall writing to my father two years before my birth. Which is also neither here nor there, but I also find it interesting and idly wonder occasionally if it's learned or genetic.

I should probably not mention the time I found a picture of my dad as a lanky longhaired teen (HIPPY), cradling a puppy, and thought, WHO IS THAT PUPPY and why do I not recall being photographed with it in the sixties? I'm fairly sure that's genetic, not learned.
