"The last time I let you pick the costumes, you made us go as the world's largest Optimus Prime Shrinky Dink," Gus said into the phone.
Shawn sighed. "It was inspired, Gus. The perfect before and after." He clipped the package of Hostess treats to the pulley zip line and sat back into his chair readjusting the Bluetooth on his ear.
"I was the after!" Gus said in a firm but brusque tone. "You made me walk around on my knees all night!" Then he slammed down the handset and turned his chair to the window. "And I'm not talking to you over the phone when we're in the same room," he added.
"I was in the kitchen when I called you," Shawn defended, wondering if this time Gus was going to try to back out. He had to go with him. They didn't have a case, they didn't have dates, Gus had already finished his route, and this was the only night of the year when all the residents of Santa Barbara willingly parted with Mallomars and Cabbage Patch Kids.
Perhaps bribery was needed. Wasn't free candy worth it in and of itself?
Shawn depressed the button and the snack cakes sailed over to Gus and dangled on the line above his head. Gus pointedly ignored it.
"I cannot be bribed with tasty dessert treats, Shawn."
Shawn smiled. "Ah, but they're not for eating, my friend. They're templates."
Gus's face fell. "Shawn, I am not dressing up as a Ho-Ho!"
