Master Rec List A-B

A while back, I started a project to make me like the world better. It's called, "rec everything". Well, not precisely. I'm going through my flist and reccing my favorite thing from everyone on there. I'm doing it alphabetically.
I tried to hit everyone, but obviously not everyone creates on my flist. Some of the recs are art or vids, too. Some people I tried to look to see if they had fic pages and couldn't find one. If I have missed you, let me know.
So, this week,
51stcenturyfox Zihuatanejo: I love all of foxy's fic, actually, and while I think some of my favorites are her early Time agency fic, this Shawshank Redemption fic is probably some of her best work. In it, a tired Red finally makes his way to Andy at Zihuatanejo, and they settle in together. Something about the laid back restraint of the narrator, I think, personally resonates in foxy herself, and so sometimes I wonder if we don't see her in all of this. I know that she did a lot of this in one sitting, and I can't speak for her inner process, but reading what she pounded out in a short soan of time was so flawless that I think she zoomed in on that thing about Red's narration that threaded through the whole film, a low mellow tumbling of words and thoughts that's even paced, even when you want to run ahead, it holds your hand and tells you that you need to slow down, taste the fish and the freedon, breathe in the Mexican night air and know that you have all the time in the world to live and all the space in the universe in which to finally expand.
adjovi Conversations With Dead People: I like that adjovi is good at doing realistic dislogue. Funny dialogue, but real, and it can turn very serious very quickly. In fact I think that might be why she's a Buffy fan, or a sidebar at least, all that funny witty devastating banter. This story, in which Ianto serves Suzie a cup of coffee leads us down a little confession on both their parts, and reveals a bit of calculation from both sides that I think is meaty. Ianto who was a plotter, Suzie who knew a lot. That they played each other, or at least reralised that they probably couldn't have gotten away with half of what they did if they hadn't almost used the other in a way. It's clever, and almost intimate. Suzie is of course, her usual cruel self, but not without a bit of knowing vulnerability.
alba17 Mad World Okay, so I heard Alex Parks do this song, Mad World and I think I went to my lj and said "SOMEONE HAS TO DO A VID TO THIS" and then someone said, "Duh Alba." And they were right. Alba uses Adam Lambert's cover, but there is nothing wrong with that. There are even parts where she uses the same clips I would have used, and oh, something about her usage of clips that deal with Owen especially, and Jack being buried in the ground makes this video beautifully match the lyrics in a heartbreaking way. And her use of Tosh's death as the lyrics echo, "no tomorrow, no tomorrow" is brilliant. Okay, I take that back. The match of clips for the whole second verse is..holy shit. Kudos, lady.
amanuensis1 Not Exactly Romance It's…okay it's because I LOVE the threesome of Ron/Hermione/Harry. I wish they had run away together. Ginny could come to visit if she wanted, but I wanted them to elope to a poly love in the hills or something. Amanuensis is fantastic at porn, and they're all turned on by some invisibility cloak voyeurism (bonus Sirius/Snape!) and then the frottage and the humping and the sweating, you know how it goes, it happens to us all…when we're…skulking about in our invisibility…cloaks with our two best…wizarding friends. Yeah. But no! It's great porn!
amonitrate Cheeseburger First: I love this fic. Of course I do or I wouldn't have picked it as my favorite, but yeah, it's just. It's so simple. Happy takes Tony out for that cheeseburger and a bunch of other things when he gets back from Afghanistan. It's not sexy, so stop thinking like that. Amonitrate has a way of doing gracelessly flawless conversation, so that it looks like two guys sitting in some shit bar smoking cigarettes, but there's more going on under the surface. Through Happy's eyes we see a Tony filtered through not only Happy's preception of him as the playboy leader of Stark Industries who happens to have hidden depths, but a damaged man who is doing a good job of appearing not damaged, or rather damaged in all the right ways, and that's clever. Tony's constant consumption is binge-worthy, and noteable, and the whole thing reminiscently and fondly reminds me of Lisa and Elliot's trek through Louisiana to Texas in Exit to Eden. Don't make a face, that book was good for all the right reasons.
angstslashhope Kiss Kiss, Pew Pew: An AU that starts from the end of season one of Torchwood, this is a SPACE OPERA, baby. TORRRRRRRCHWOOOOOOD IN SPAAAAAAAAAACE. And there ain't nothing wrong with that. I dunno why I am excited at the idea of Team TW just picking up and looking for Jack in space on their own, and THEN TO ACTUALLY FIND HIM, it's loltastic, but Hope never manages to ever cheapen anything or play it for the lols. If she had done Cyberwoman, you can bet we would have all been hysterically laughing and then bawling, just bawling. Jack is reunited with his team in this fic, but they've almost outgrown him, becoming more than him, more than they expected and less needy of him in the very act of looking for him. But even as a great deal of the functions he performed for them they can now fill themselves, you get the sense that there are less tangible more emotional holes that only he can fill that drive them forward, and isn't that why family is what it is, even after you've outgrown the nest, or perhaps ridden it into the depths of space?
arsenicjade Vicarious Okay, it's Britney Spears/Kevin Richardson RPF. I wish I could explain how amazingly good at RPF and RPS arsenic is. It's like a specialty, and I don't think it’s just because she writes a lot of it. I think it just suits her. she takes a person who I don't give much thought to like Britney Spears, and makes her human in ways that she might very well be. She makes me care about her. Sample this:
She calls Madonna, "I shouldn't do this on the phone." But they promised each other, after the first few weeks, when Madonna had told Guy and things had stabilized, they had promised that they would always tell each other first if things had changed.
"Who is it?" Madonna sounds like she expected this. Britney sometimes forgets that Madonna doesn't know everything. She puts on a damn good show of it.
"Kevin Richardson."
"Baby, don't be somebody's rebound."
Britney smiles at the concern underneath the consternation. "We just kissed. It's nothing. But I have this thought that maybe, when all his shit is done and over with that I want it to be. And that's enough to be making this call, y'know?"
Unsurprisingly, Madonna does.
Mutherfucking Madonna, Like just there BAM! But there was the phase there, and I remember it, a blip in the celebrity blogs, whatever. And that's the whole scene. Arsenic ends a great deal of her scenes like this in this story. It's a sweet fantasy, that Britney and Kevin might find each other and it might just this once become something undramatic, something sweet, something fulfilling for both of them. It's not cloying, but wish fulfillment for the reader, who knows what's real and what is narrative construct, I almost wish this could have been for them, even while I get that it's completely fake. Damn her, for making me live vicariously through text. Dalek squaw, you bastard.
basingstoke Everyman: I bet every person and their mom recced this once, but it's my favorite, DESPITE that bas also wrote the Jack is weevil Janet's baby daddy fic, and the Addams Family crossover with Torchwood, AND a bunch of Highlander fics I have loved. Everyman is about Jack's love of everything and everyone, and I think it's rather…romantic in its way of looking at him, not that he's specifically perfected here, over time what started as one on some love, and sex these things expands into a kind of agape that's…I like to think of it as becoming this because then immortality has a reward for Jack as he gets older, and it isn't just a burden.
blue_fjords No One Knows What Happened: I think about once a month or so, someone says something about how batshit Suzie is, and I think to myself that if she had been that crazy, Jack would have never hired her. The fact of the matter is, simply nutcase Suzie is one dimensional, and it's more satisfying, more terrifying, to think of a person who began their tenure at TW as sane, and went over the edge. We acknowledge that it happens with Alex. Presumably it's probably happened before, too. Why Torchwood doesn't have regular psych evals is beyond me. Blue's Suzie is normal. As normal as she can be, really, working where she does, and she still has her little ticks and quirks, but she thinks like a real person, like a sane person with a streak of melancholy. She'd not an evil conniving genius. Several people have told me that they would read a sane Suzie. Here she is.
bluejeanius COMIC: Fandom, RTD and Moffat Because she said how I felt. Also, zombie!Ianto. Bonus: WHO TOUCHED THE COFFEE MACHINE?!
