I want to write a novel for Nanowrimo. My problem is that the last time I "won" nanowrimo, I was only 8 chapters in.

This year, I want to do a whole story in 50-60K, and not just the first 1/4 of one.

But I need ideas.

Gimme ideas.

Because I am selfish like that.

I read the question, and what popped into my about-to-fall-asleep brain was "ask your kid".

Write some serious smut with original characters (or at least with characters with the serial numbers filed off). You can publish novels of anywhere from 35,000 words (at the low end) on up to 100,000+ word blockbusters with the four biggest erotic romance epublishers (Ellora's Cave, Samhain, Loose Id, and Liquid Silver, if you must know).

Fifty thousand words is more than enough to qualify as a novel for any of them. And it's not like you can't get weird. They all publish SF, fantasy, and all kinds of genres.

Assuming, of course, that you might want to try to actually earn a little money from this project.

Just be warned that if you do want to earn some money from this then writing your 50000 wd novel is only the beginning and you end up having to do some serious rewriting and editing. I speak from experience.
I'm STILL working on my 2009 NaNo novel. BUT - I do think I will get it finished one day. I wanted it to be this November - but shit happened. Next November maybe.

Write a science fiction novella set on a doomed planet whose civilization is collapsing, and how that affects the future of three linked characters, the suspense being that the reader wants to find out who makes it out alive.

Uh... unicorns take over Manhattan?

I'm so out of ideas right now. Sorry!

But I'm excited that you're thinking about doing nanowrimo! I'm going to do it, too. :D

didn't you have something about an evil unicorn? and wasn't there an original poly-fic you were talking about a while ago (like last year maybe)?

OMG YOU SHOULD WRITE A POLYFIC WITH AN EVIL UNICORN ABOUT A GIRL WHO WORKS AT CEDAR POINT (or some generic amusement park) cuz you worked at the petting zoo, and there's a unicorn, and it's EVIL...

i got nothing

Your strengths:

Multiple POV. You are ACES at that, and weaving complex plotlines. Something with intrigue, spies, lean toward the fantastical/paranormal, or not. Thriller writer...I can see that. It has to be something that your natural cleverness with words, expressions, situations can shine. I know you don't care for fantasy much, yeah? So forget Urban Fantasy I suppose, though I can see it. NOt the single kick-ass loner chick w/werewolves hanging around, but the other direction the genre also takes. TW is sorta urban fantasy, I would think.

I could see you writing thrillers with kick-ass unique characters who all have their own agenda but have to pull together for a common purpose. Good or bad. Anti-hero even, like Tony Soprano, Dexter...the guys we shouldn't like, I mean really, but yet we do...

Your weakness: self doubt. Don't you let it go and cripple you and keep you from giving this a serious go, if that is what you want to do. You are more than talented enough to get your name on that damn shelf.

If you are interested in some good plotting techniques, to get some plans down this month (which is what I'm doing) holler. I am trying to be careful not to over-plot, but this is a multiple POV story I am doing so I need to get some stuff prepared beforehand.
